We heard this a lot, but I lived it and its so true that everything we do in our life and everything that creates this path that we take contributes to where we land. You use it on your muscles, and I use it on my legs because for spinners your IT bands are always incredibly tight. And the reality was it was still very early in the industry, and there were no other boutique businesses at that point. And its something Im currently actually thinking a lot about because theres no question. You describe a moment where in your first center, I believe, they wouldnt allow you to put signage on the outside of the street entrance. So what a formula for success in our businesses. And it wasnt until therapy in fact, my first therapy session ever where I sat down and my motivation was my father was dying, and I had no idea how I was going to go on with that. I did, and in that period of time, 40 minutes, I knew this was going to be a game changer, because I could still do the mindful part and have the numbers. So that was really what I drew upon the most in terms of my leadership style. Courage is knowing what not to fear. Plato or SoulCycle? That was what she was bringing to the game. You touched on it a little bit, but maybe if you could talk more in-depth about what are some tangible things to help people understand what mental fitness could look like? Would you believe she is in her 50's but looks 30-ish! I sat behind a desk, which was miserable for me because I was so used to being physical all the time, but I had no other choice. It wasnt a light bulb moment necessarily to, Oh, I need to go create a brand. What did you find out when you did some of the soul searching that seemed to come from getting into the bike? You can find that, and thats amazing, or you can find the opposite. Ruth Zukerman: Yes. I still see lines around the block for their product. People are not coming to spin class six days a week. When I graduated, I moved to New York City. Flywheel offers an intense cardio workout with high calorie burn. We want to share them with everybody else. We had personalized cubby holes, and we saw who was coming to class ahead of time and had their shoes waiting for them. I think the power of storytelling is that there might be a nugget you can share that maybe tomorrow, maybe in five years or 10 years you look back on and think, That was actually really helpful. After her 1996 divorce, the former dancer and aerobics instructor felt lost and took to the Spin bike. So you get into spinning. Zukerman: I had my family by the point I started businesses. But also, we have a lot of business school students in the audience now. I learned a lot about what people did and didnt like and I honed my own method within this genre of exercise. A few years later, she left that partnership and co-founded spin studio chain Flywheel. Zukerman: For me and my experience, so much of it was about circumstances and it being the right time within my own personal evolution. Ruth Zukerman: Well, it had major repercussions for me because growing up with a mother like that, your self-esteem is not going to be very high. I had the confidence after having built my spin class for the past five years, I knew that I was on to something. I believe [unintelligible] as an instructor for Soul, which must have been weird. I learned that the simple idea of the importance of listening to people would be really important in business as well and listening to my employees and listening to what works for them and what doesnt work for them, listening to their despair when they made a mistake, but then encouraging them that you can learn from your mistake and lets see what we can do with that, again, typical ways in which I brought up my children. If I was in a dance class, and my dance teacher said, Beautiful job, Ruth, that took me through my day. But theres also a business nugget where they felt that you could actually grow the business by attracting folks who otherwise wouldnt be cyclers or spin-goers. Ruth Zukerman: Honestly, Mike, I had no idea. Mike: Ladies and gentlemen, thank you. Okay, thank you. And as I was talking before about my dance classes; I thought I was going to be a dancer. Ruth and her allegedly lover, Cohn were spotted during outings. And Ive heard a lot of complaints about that from riders at both SoulCycle and Flywheel that the miss the way it used to be, and they miss the community and the attention that was given to the individual because its been lost. Leibson: What led to you start SoulCycle and Flywheel? But Im very interested in seeing where the fitness industry particularly goes. the national park service is quizlet . And unfortunately, I paid a big toll for that. I think its important to have that experience under your belt before you become a mother or a father. Lastly, it was the summer of 2009 where I was teaching a SoulCycle class, and it was then that I met my future cofounder of Flywheel. Its not a choice. I remember that story I heard in Ruths narrative. Is there anything youd want to make sure you get out if theres one thing folks can take home? It wasnt simple to get the best person in the world. We need to think about and ask ourselves, What do we want to do? Ruth Zukerman's path to entrepreneurship was nothing if not unconventional. And Elizabeth, one of my cofounders, came up with the idea of just putting this rickshaw outside, painting it yellow and putting the name of our business on it to attract attention. So immediately at Flywheel we thought, were adding technology to the bike, so lets be consistent, and lets have small portable laptops set up in our lobby area so people dont have to wait in line and people can sign up by themselves. We might not have the answers when were 37. Mike: If its okay, Id love to end with a personal question that I think you touch on a little bit or at least led me to want to ask in your book. It was an idea I had dreamed about, but never had the capital, and she did. Ruth Zukerman: It really helped me realize how much strength I needed to build. All right.
